Strangely enough, I thought this had a good ending. Jake found someone he could care for and this should get him off his butt to go out and look for someone for himself rather than borrow someone else's wife. Laura did the right thing and cut the cord abruptly and finally. I can't understand why some of the commenters are looking for another chapter when you clearly mentioned up front that this was a trilogy. Trilogy, as in three parts.
I can't quite get my head around this relationship. Matt apparently has a medical problem due to prostate surgery, yet he apparently can get at least a partial hardon and can have a orgasm. With medication, he can get a full erection and they can work out some sort of procedure to satisfy them both. I know about the medication, because I had and ED issue and an injectable material gave me incredible erections (to the point where I had to take an antidote to get rid of it). If Laura loves Matt as much as she says she could work around the logistical problems and they wouldn't have to resort to the surrogate. But, different strokes for different folks, I guess. 5*

Trying to interject some honest skepticism into the constant arguments for Right to Privacy. ether personal or public or from commercial and government intrusion. I have pointed out that the concept of privacy (as generally recognized within our society and culture, is a rather modern invention. And now as obsolete as an odyllic detector or blunderbuss.
Privacy as distinct from confidentiality, which are often confused together, as you and I would recognize the idea only came into it's modern usage around the fifteenth century during and in response to the Little Ice Age. Wood Fuel was expensive to collect, transport and distribute. The forests of Europe and Asia were being wiped out to feed and heat the Western and Eastern worlds.
Rebuilding housing to smaller rooms with solid doors cut down on the effort to heat them. And suddenly the Bourgeois were alone, probably for the first time in their lives. The poor of course still lived one or more multi-generational families in a one-room hovel. The wealthy/nobility were also denied private lives. From conception thru birth thru childhood and adult lives unto their deaths, inherited estates and privileges precluded any thought of ever being alone, without witnesses.
And probably, a majority of the human race still lives without privacy. Of course us entitled First Worlders are so certain in our vainglorious egotism that we confuse a temporary situation with the Laws of the Universe. Actually, the USPS is an interesting part of the history of government intrusion into individual privacy. As it was from the beginning the original secret police mechanism for the Federal government. And has remained so until quite recently, as a changing world has left the USPS to slowly deteriorate along with Canals and lighthouses

ass_p, you listed a lot of off the shelf items that are or will be soon available for voyeurs everywhere. But all that is already foreshadowed with obsolescence. Eventually we will see development of bio-technology, injectable before or after birth. The laws to regulate it, forbidding use on minors and restricting it to consenting adults will only last one or two generations before universal demand sweeps away all prohibitions.

Hope the Author/other people won't mind me airing some of thoughts on what might happen in the future.
I'm going to assume that they successfully repel the Drakkar, make any repairs/upgrades they need after the battle, etc. I have an idea of what the Ashanath might tell John of his father, but not going to mention that. Instead, I'm going to skip ahead to where they meet Calara's family.
Now, I think one of two things could happen here. Either we finally see the assassin that was hired to kill him, OR, while hanging out with Calara's family, her father and brothers receive orders to move out because the Terran navy has officially gone to war with uhh...whatever that other race was called. (I'm really bad with names. ;_; Sorry!) And we know Rachel(that was the lady that worked at the cloths store and became a combat medic, right?) was sent to an area with possible hostilities, so John and and his lovely ladies have to go get her out. (While possibly carrying some marines to get them there quickly to help due to his upgraded ship being so fast now.)
Then, either Rachel is injured and John has to give her an injection to heal her, or she works in the ship's medical bay to heal other people that they got out of the area and she's so exhausted that Alyssa takes care her. (Possibly eventually leading to John joining in.)
Which then gives the crew of the ship a doctor for their medbay. :D Although I doubt a medical bay would be outfitted for DNA research that I'm sure John would want done on him so he can figure more out about what he is and what he does to women. (If the Ashana don't tell him enough.) So maybe he'd have to spend more money for more equipment...and also I don't know if a combat medic would have had the schooling required to do DNA related things. But we could just chop that up to John increasing her intelligence and her doing some studying on her own. I would personally love it if she "took some samples" to study (winkwinknudge) from John and manages to isolate the healing properties and makes like a... injectable thing that Dana can put into their battle suits/armor that will heal them in case they take damage in a fight. Of course it's up to the author on if they would sell it to the military, or if it'd even have any affect at all on males. (Might not be that great to have a healing agent that only worked on women for the military/navy.)
Although that mysterious assassin guy I still don't have any real thoughts on. D: His agent could attak John while they're visiting Calara's parents, or maybe pretends to be one of the injured people they rescue... or it might not even happen any time soon.
As for ideas about future crew members; they at least need a second watch crew for the bridge while the main crew is taking a break/having fun/get pregnant eventually. More boarding party marines because while I enjoy seeing John and Alyssa kick ass, it's not really possible for just two of them to always win in every situation. (Also, tough girls are hot.) And it couldn't hurt to have an extra maintenance/engineer team for Dana to lead. But, eh, that's all up to what the Author wants/foresees.

Yes, lifelong. Always. As far as I can remember; but you have to realize, until recently, I didn't know NOT thinking about sexual topics was not the normal situation (everyone thinks THEY are normal, everyone else is abnormal) - I just thought the media was selling sex, so of _course_ they wanted you to believe _everyone_ was thinking about it all the time. You have to put yourself into the HSDS frame of mind: if you never think about it, how do you think about it? Or even know you're NOT thinking about? Getting around the bases? Sorry, never even bothered to go up to bat. Why? I went out on a few dates, because that was what you were supposed to do, but after that? Been there, done that. Why keep eating the same dull popcorn at the movies? Again, as hard as it is for a non-HSDS person, imagine if the thought never even comes to you... how would you know it's there to think? I couldn't agree more with your statement: HSDS can, and does come with life changing effects. It has the ability to prevent and kill marriages. Which is one of the reasons I wanted to take some time to open up the discussion... and try to be brave while I stand up to be counted.

I don't know how the Progenitors have survived as a race seeing as how territorial and confrontational they seem to be towards each other. There's the whole paraphrased joke about how Progenitors reproduce...carefully. Although this might explain why John's mother wasn't ordered to take John with her when she escaped. They might not want to raise the proverbial viper in their own nest. This would also explain why the Progenitor tech is hardwired into their DNA. If all Progenitors hit-it-and-quit-it when siring a son, the sons would need the info to reach their full potential.
Now for my wish list, so to speak.
Female Progenitors!!!
I'm thinking that Progenitors tend to stick to siring daughters, seeing as they have that option in every sperm already, so as to increase their armies of servants. (Although I can't figure out why, this being the case, the Maliri have been engineered to have a birthrate skewed towards female births...) Given Progenitor's normal treatment of women, I doubt that a Female Progenitor is a natural occurrence in any way.
Therefore, Alyssa being a Female Progenitor, made that way by John subconsciously, is the way to go forward. If, when he impregnates a woman, he uses his sperm, his psychic catalyst, at the moment of conception, to choose not only a female child, but a Progenitor female, it would take far less energy than it did to convert Alyssa.
Also if he gives a copy of Athena to guide all his children, even any males, it could drastically change things, especially if he tweaks the natural tendencies of his son(s) away from the destructive instincts. Keep the kick ass abilities and skills, but less despotic leanings.
If nothing else, making his daughters Progenitors from conception will nip any need to feed them his sperm in the bud. Let's face it, even though this is Literotica, twincest is hot, Daddy robbing the cradle is a major turn off for me, plot not withstanding.
I'm not sure what female Progenitors could use as a psychic catalyst. Female ejaculate doesn't have the same physical parity as sperm, though I guess there could be some sort of Progenitor (i.e. John) engineered microbe, virus or bacteria in it that could serve the same catalytic function. We might not have seen it's effects with Alyssa and the girls due to them being bonded to John through her as Matriarch, since he usually gets his sperm in them first anyway. I wonder if Alyssa tried to recruit a girl for John, like a Maliri, while John was with some of his other girls, would that girl become solely Alyssa's thrall?
Finally, how to recruit men without making them drink it.
You've got a brilliant doctor on board with Rachel. What if she came up with a way to take one of John's sperm samples, separating out the sperm themselves, and creating an injectable, or IV form. They would only want to use it for friends and allies, of either gender, whom they want to help health and longevity-wise. Charles Harris, the Fernandez clan. You wouldn't want to make the same level of bond as John has with his current girls.
This way, he can keep Calara's family alive and healthy, so she doesn't outlive them. They can then serve on the Invictus, or the version of the Progenitor ship John and Dana eventually design and build, and live on the guest room level for privacy.
This alternate delivery method would allow there to be no disruption of relationships between Jack and Maria Fernandez, or Mateo and Jack's medical intern, Lt. Emily Campbell, if that gets any more serious. It would cut out so much talented male crew he could add if John keeps stealing their women!
Plus, if any or all men added to the crew brought their own women along, it would avoid the subject of John sharing his girls with other men. I always felt that if you're going to have a harem, do it right; no sharing the women except among themselves.
It being the 28th century, and John's preference for smart and capable women, we can do away with the eunuch guards and the locked wing of the palace, but a little harmless flirting is as much as I care to see his ladies doing with any other men than him.
