I practiced medicine for many years and have a psychiatrist and a psychologist as two of my five children. I wish that the help these two people received reflected the real world of mental health treatment. Quality mental health diagnosis and treatment in the USA is really only available for the rich. What the unwealthy receive is poor diagnosis, and drugs, either prescribed or acquired on the street. And even with wealth available to pay for care, the results shown in this story are rarely achieved. Well written story. -4-

1. My GP doctor explained that the drugs are only half of the treatment, and actually the 'crutch' half of the treatment -that (in my own words) without dealing with my mis-wired brain, the drugs would only ever be a bandaid holding my wound together.
2. If at first you don't succeed, try and try again! Try different KINDS of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers etc.
I went to 6, yep, SIX different psychologists before I clicked with one finally. I was seeing her for a few years when a chance appointment with a social worker showed me that you didn't need a piece of paper in psychology to get the message across even better -in other words, this social worker clicked with me even more than the great psychologist!

@Xny89C Hope I got that right. Cancer treatment via pharmaceuticals right now is only offering incrememtal improvements. You might argue that geting an extra 12 months of life is the difference between watching your kid(s) finish school. Your daughter married, or the birth of your first grandchild but once a product has been tarred by controversy the medical fraternity invariably turn their back on it. Thalidomide was a swear word for two generations despite positive treatment outcomes in a blood cancer and leprosy... And that is true of other drugs that got mured in controversy
(not many others but enough).
